Esther M. Zimmer Lederberg
Cold Spring Harbor papers and books
Archive DI
Archive "DI", notebook "DI.A" is effectively the syllabus used
for a course Esther took during the Spring of 1947 at UC Berkeley.
The course is "Botany 128: Cytogenetics". An examination of
reference papers and books for this course includes the following
list (this is not the entire list of references).
Archive "DI", booklet "DI.B" is similar to "DI.A", but is for a
different UC Berkely course: Bacteriology 250, the laboratory
course that corresponds to Botany 128, Cytogenetics. Additional
papers and books are referenced, and are included here as well.
References are from notebook "DI.A", unless explicitly stated to
be found in another notebook. Some references may appear in several
notebooks.
There is some significance to this list of references. Almost
all the references are to research colleagues that attended Cold
Spring Harbor Symposia with a subject matter related to Genetics.
Thus this list of references shows that these researchers were
familiar with and interested in all the published papers and books
related to genetics: certainly Esther Lederberg was interested in
ideas expressed in all these references. The topics of interest
were of interest to all the attendees.
A few of the references are to reasearchers that might not have
been able to attend the Cold Spring Harbor Symposia, as they might
be outside the United States. Examples of such researchers include
J. B. S. Haldane, Julian Huxley, and others. However, the attendees
would have been quite aware of the ideas of these researchers as well.
